A Friend in Good Times and Bad

My mother grew up in a big family.  She was one of seven kids until her two brothers died in their teens.  This may be why she thought that anyone who was around could pitch in with whatever she needed.

During the period that we lived in that new trailer and before her fall from the grapevine, I had a friend (that I had just met) come to stay over for the first time.  Unfortunately, on this same day, our water pipes froze.  We had a surprise snow storm.  The temperatures dropped.  Since the underpinning had not been installed yet, the pipes froze!

My mother insisted that my new friend and I go out in the snow and freezing temperatures to wrap heat tape around all of the water pipes.

Our first overnight stay consisted of hours in the cold, feeling as if our hands were going to literally freeze off, wrapping water pipes.  Teeth chattering, snow hitting our faces, and hands that had gone numb from the cold, I figured she would never come over again.

This is an on-going story of my life and some of the childhood adversities that I faced.  If you would like to start at the beginning of my tale, please read Four-year-old and Mother Survive Bludgeoning by River Rock, or go to the Childhood category and start at the bottom.

What happened after?  You’d think she would decline any future invitations, right?  Being put to work in the snow for a person that she had just met.  Well…apparently, she took it in stride because, after 27 years, she is still my best friend!

I’m very thankful that she stuck around through the good times and the BAD!

I have a forever best friend just like yours but mine had seen my mother beat me on more than a few times. And still was willing to be my friend!
Bye the way your last 7 or 8 posts were written in a different language. Was that on purpose?

Hello Anne, I’m sorry to hear that.
Those forever friends are truly a blessing to us. We need those at different times of our life don’t we?!

No the posts in another language were not me! I’m so sorry, I was updating visuals and apparently someone hacked in. I deleted all of those posts from the site, but I believe they are all still showing in the WordPress reader.

Sorry for the flood to your inbox, I didn’t realize that had happened until the following day =(

Yes it also happened to delete my entire site, which took hours of phone calls and chats to get restored. I don’t understand the purpose of anyone posting on my site or what they would gain, but nevertheless they are gone now. When I saw all of those posts, I was dumbfounded!
